My Health Journey

The Emotional Side Of Healing

Getting healthy is a lot more emotionally involved than you may think. But let me just start off by saying that I am not perfectly healthy now, and honestly never will be.. our bodies are imperfect. But I have, like many of you, struggled with something for years and am finally at a point in my life where my body looks and feels it’s best. It’s been a long journey but I wish for nothing more than to share all that I have done in order to help some of you.

The Beginning

I remember the first time I knew something was wrong.  I had just eaten a meal that I had eaten probably 100 times, and suddenly my stomach started to cramp, I got really cold, chills all over my body. It had gotten so bad so fast that I began writhing on the floor. I felt so nauseous, and tried making myself throw up but wasn’t able to. It would start to go away then immediately come back full force. I was crying out in pain. It was honestly the worst pain I had ever experienced, even worse than awful period cramps because of the fear of not knowing what was happening to my body. I literally felt like my stomach was going to burst through my skin.

It thankfully passed after a few hours, but I was really, really scared.

The Healing Process

Physical Side

Over the next few years I became extremely cautious with my food. I kept making little changes in my diet, always eliminating food that gave me problems.

My symptoms included: sharp, excruciating pains in lower and upper stomach, chills and goosebumps covering my body, nausea, rash from chest to stomach, unintentional weight loss, continuous breakouts, various food sensitivities, and feeling totally and completely helpless.

But it had gotten to the point that even healthy foods began to give me these problems. And foods would one day be fine, but then another day suddenly cause me to drop to the floor and curl up into a ball. It felt like my body was continuously rejecting all of the food I tried to give it.

my healing journey, sibo, emotional side of

March 2, 2017. It wasn’t until later that I had realized how thin I had become. My body wasn’t absorbing any nutrients.

I signed up for Dr. Axe’s Leaky Gut Program after watching a webinar because I knew my disease was at least partially caused from my gut being damaged. It is a magnificent program that helped both my husband and I, but I knew I needed further attention.

When we were in Florida for a holiday I made an appointment with a naturopathic doctor I used to go to. And with the normal testing- blood work and hormone test, he gave me something I never heard of before- a breath test. To test my level of bacteria in my body.

When the results came back it showed that I had super high levels of bacteria which gave me the diagnosis of Small Intestinal Bacteria Overgrowth aka SIBO.

I was ecstatic. The fact that there was a name for my condition meant that there were certain steps I could take to help heal my body. I had gone so many years, slowly giving up hope and this was the first sign that showed the light at the end of the tunnel.

So I went on the specific SIBO diet- cutting out a lot of different vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, sugar, protein, etc. And although this helped a little bit.. I am sorry to say that it did not heal me. My body was still weak, I still felt like my stomach was always upset. I went back to the doctor but never quite felt like he had my best interest in mind, something about how he spoke just didn’t show the care that I needed. So back to square one.

*small lesson: You do not need to see a doctor you do not love. You are your own best health advocate. Trust yourself and your feelings.*

I started seeing an acupuncturist, and after our consultation she gave me such confidence again that I started tearing up and gave her a huge hug. She is actually a Traditional Chinese Medicine Doctor so she was able to help me more than the typical acupuncturist. She first put me on high dosages of natural antibacterials to help kill the bacteria, high doses of probiotics to bring back the balance, and a shake to heal the gut lining and give my body the nutrients I wasn’t absorbing through food.

She also ordered a stool test which was by far the NASTIEST thing I have ever done but it is the best test to see how your body is doing. It tested my nutrient absorption, which bacteria levels were high, if I had any viruses or parasites, etc. This allowed my doctor to personalize my treatment even more.

my healing journey, sibo, emotional side of healing.

September 22, 2017. I was far along in my healing protocol and my stomach was doing better, but I was still really thin and dealing with a lot of emotional baggage.

Emotional Side

But it wasn’t until I tested my hormones through Delgado Naturals and saw how high my cortisol was that I also began to work on my emotional stress. If you read my other posts on my story on healing. ways to deal with emotional stress, and how to reduce cortisol, you’ll know that I have had some pretty hard years.

And you must know, this is so very important, that all stress manifests itself in physical ways. So my constant low level stress was causing my stomach to get all twisted up inside. I was constantly on the verge of tears, I was extremely lonely and heart broken, so I took the path to begin seeing a counselor. Having that outlet and a source of calm wisdom helped heal my heart and mind.

The Finale

Through persistence and patience, I am now at a point in my life where my body is absorbing nutrients, my gut is strong and healthy, my energy has dramatically increased, and I am, without a doubt, so much happier. I still go once a month to my acupuncturist to keep my body aligned. I don’t really take many supplements besides ones to balance my hormones, and I have kept up with the lifestyle changes to reduce my stress.

Now, I’ve been told that SIBO never truly leaves your system.  You can help it go into recession, but it may never fully go away. And that’s okay- I have accepted it. Through this health journey I have discovered various natural ways to help my digestive system whenever I do have a flare up. I am just so thankful that I never gave up trying or looking for a doctor that I truly felt was looking out for ME.

Why I Don’t Believe In Diets

Bio Individuality

why i dont believe in diets. bio individuality.

I have a seriously unpopular opinion. I’m also part Italian so I’m full of passion, especially when it comes to things I whole heartedly believe in.

I DO NOT like diets.

why i dont believe in diets. bio individuality.

I really don’t like the ‘popular’ fad ones where they claim to help you lose 20 lbs in ten days, or the ‘eat only apples’ kind of diets. These do not work. I repeat- DO NOT WORK. They’re completely unsustainable because you will inevitably rebound and regain the weight you lost, or maybe even gain more because you deprived your body of the nutrition it needed.

Teaching your body to “yo-yo” between weights is extremely unhealthy- you’re only teaching it to be under constant stress. With these fast and cheap diets you are also not learning anything about your body and what it actually needs. Your mind and body are meant to work together, it is one machine. And when you simply treat your stomach like a food vending machine it is not getting the attention it requires to run properly.

why i dont believe in diets. bio individuality.

But there’s also something else that I really, really do not appreciate, especially as a health coach.

I cannot stand it when people push their diets on others as if it is the ONLY way to be healthy.

Yes, the vegans, the vegetarians, Whole30, Keto, etc. They shove their diets in your face and make it seem as if you do not follow their diets, you will be unhealthy. Like their way of living is the only way.

Lemme tell you something:

Everyone’s body is different. Every single one of us have different genes, different ancestors, different lifestyles, etc. What works for a celebrity may not work for you. What works for your friend may not work for you. What works for a Natural Doctor may not work for you. What works for your sister may not even work for you.

You are special. you are unique. you are different.

and you need to treat your body as such.

I have a serious problem with people who claim to be leaders in the health movement and yet do not integrate one of the most important concepts into their teaching: BIO INDIVIDUALITY.

We need to realize that there is no such thing as a one diet fits all. There never was such a thing and there never will be. And using fear to force people to listen to them and their way of eating is absolutely ridiculous.

Yes, there are many people who have had incredible success with certain diets- where they have actually changed their life. But that does not mean it is the only path to a vibrant, healthy life.

So I’m calling out all of the doctors, authors, coaches, etc. Let people be! Let them decide what works best for them. Stop trying to force them into your lifestyle. Simply give them the tools they need to learn and experiment, and from there decide what is best for them.

And to all of you wanting to achieve a healthier life- do not fall for scare tactics. Things that are good and true do not need the added level of fear. Truth can hold its own. I urge you to experiment, research, and take the time to learn your body.

I am a HUGE ADVOCATE for teaching people about their bio-individuality. You know your body best. You are the best advocate for your health. Don’t let anyone tell you differently.

Hopefully I didn’t scare too many of you off, but this is something I believe to be extremely vital to a balanced life. Gotta speak my truth you know?

Whats a diet you’ve tried that hasn’t worked for you?

Beware of Toxic Beds + Natural Mattress Recommendation

sleep tight.. don’t let the chemicals bite

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Getting a good night’s rest is crucial for your health; your body resets, your hormones balance, your stress reduces. If you aren’t getting good enough rest you can unfortunately cause your body to gain weight, develop chronic diseases, and other impairments. No bueno.

But let’s talk about what you’re sleeping ON. Were you aware that all conventional mattresses are full of nasty toxins and chemicals?

Yeah. I didn’t either. Some can cause cancer, hormone imbalance, allergic reactions, heart problems… yada yada yada. It’s bad- and what’s worse is that they’re completely unnecessary (as most (all) toxins are.)

Common Chemicals Found in Mattresses

Fire Retardants

At first this sounds like a good thing… but just wait: Polyurethane is the most common fire retardant used… but it actually breaks down into VOC’s (volatile organic compounds) (yikes) (you want to avoid these). And if that’s not bad enough, when polyurethane breaks down, it can release polybrominated-biphenyl-ethers (PBDEs), which are very toxic chemicals that can stay in your body for a super long time.

So while you’re sleeping, you’re breathing all of this in. so 8 hours a day… for as long as you live…… yikes yikes yikes. scary.

If you’re still like “well, I don’t really want to have a fire suddenly bust out in my room” then you should know that there are various natural fire resistant materials that can be used; the most popular is wool. Which is actually better for your body’s ability to regulate temperate anyway.

Boric Acid

You probably recognize this ingredient by its use as a roach killer. Companies will line their mattresses with it to prevent bacteria and bed bugs.

BUT(t) you should know that Boric Acid is a seriously DANGEROUS POISON.

“Symptoms of acute exposure are deadly, especially for young babies, and can include convulsions, blistering of the skin, and even coma. Long-term exposure has been known to cause developmental and neurological problems in infants, and in adults inhalation of boric acid may result in damage of the upper respiratory tract.”

-Dr Axe

Just a thought: those babies with hardly any immune system, think about how much of an impact constant exposure to these chemical and toxins can do?

Yaaaaay- another poisonous chemical! Similar to arsenic, but instead of being a powder antimony is a metal. When exposed to this chemical it has been shown to cause reproductive problems, irritation in eyes, skin, and lungs, and super high exposure can cause liver and heart damage.

ALSO: BABIES. yes, new studies have been shown that a combination of certain chemicals, antimony included, can cause sudden infant death syndrome.

You can find this sucker in pretty much anything. (including feminine products ladies… you REALLY don’t want to expose yourself that intensely every month to some of the harshest chemicals)

But I digress, mattresses contain formaldehyde- and even though it’s not a huge exposure, the acute exposure over long periods of time (hello, like 100 years if you live that long) can cause serious problems; cancer, liver toxicity, neurotoxicity, and damage to your lymphatic system.

And from research I really can’t understand why they would even add it into mattresses…? Just for fun I guess.

My intention is not to scare you, or make you throw your mattress out and sleep on the floor. I just want to educate you, so that you have all of the information to make a sound decision for you and your budget.

Thankfully, there are various companies trying to decrease the amount of chemicals used in our mattresses. They range in price and “purity” which is great! When James and I moved into our house we didn’t have a mattress because we were previously living in a travel trailer. We actually slept on a borrowed blow up mattress for about two months.

We were blessed enough to be able to buy an Avocado Mattress. These are the BOMB.

After re-reading all of this on their website I’m totally geeking out and so excited. Seeing companies who are so concerned with healthy and green living makes my heart sing.

I love the mattress. It’s not too soft or hard, no weird smell or anything. And my husband who is pretty picky with sleeping surfaces enjoys it!

For those of you who enjoy a softer surface, they also offer a mattress topper, as well as other natural and organic products.

They are also usually running sales, like right now is $150 off your order with code GREENHOLIDAY17 (this is not an affiliate code, I really just love their stuff and would love to see you enjoy one!)! So I would definitely wait till they have a sale or promotion of sorts if you are wanting to purchase one.

Comment below if you’ve ever thought of getting a natural mattress and which one you like!

alright, imma go take a nap now.

Benefits of Yoga//My Story

Namaste, Beautiful Yogis

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

We’ve all seen them- those girls on the internet doing crazy arm balances and stretches in beautiful scenery.. makes yoga seem like a dream, yeah? The healing, relaxing, de-stressing mind-body ritual that has been around for thousands of years, and that is now taking the world and instagram by storm. It was actually first used to center the mind before meditation, allowing a deeper, calmer, more focused meditative state. Today it is more so used as a form of exercise, a way to release stress, and a super easy way to make yourself look really, really cool.

I began my practice a couple years ago when I wanted to change my body and start exercising (at 19), but I wasn’t really into running or any other cardio. Yoga brought this wonderful way to work my entire body in a very non-strenuous way but with amazing results. Seriously, people started asking what I was doing to get so skinny and fit.

However, the yoga I was doing wasn’t hatha (slow, stretching) yoga, it’s called Interval Yoga which combines deep stretching with high intensity movement. This form of yoga was invented by the bulgarian beauty Ali Kamenova. If your main motivation for yoga is losing weight/gaining muscle or definition, I highly recommend her youtube videos.

As I developed a body I was pleased with, I began dabbling in other forms of yoga. Some more slow, relaxing, others that held positions for 5 long, deep breaths.. etc. I now have a wide range of yoga series that I practice and I definitely feel like my body is thriving from it. The other great thing was that as I started looking more into yoga I began to read ALL of the amazing benefits! Yoga not only positively affects the body, but even more importantly- the mind.

I’ll be honest, I get stressed and overwhelmed pretty easily. I tend to hold in a lot of angst, stress, and grief, it’s just the way my mind processes things (INFJ.) But this can cause serious internal damage; stress on the body is even more detrimental than unhealthy food, lack of exercise, etc. But yoga has the ability to counteract that! It is not really the poses that are so healing, but the breathing, the focusing on the body, letting the mind become still and rest.

Yoga is beneficial for literally everyone. If you want to lose weight, stretch, detox, have better digestion, sleep better, have more focus, reduce stress, increase mental clarity– yoga is for you. And we all have at least one of those things we wish was better, right?

Even just five minutes a day, five minutes out of your 15-18 hour day is nothing and it offers SO many benefits! Do you think it’s definitely a possibility to add in a small daily practice into your daily routine? What benefits would you hope to achieve, what are you currently struggling with? Comment below and let me know! Maybe even tag a friend you’d like to start yoga with!

7 Reasons Why You Need a Health Journal

Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

No, this isn’t a “diary” full of secrets and first kisses and boys and drama.. that’s another thing entirely. This is a journal that is solely dedicated to your health and symptoms that you experience day to day. I know it sounds kind of unnecessary and a waste of time, but in order for you to really maximize your health, you need to prioritize it. Once you fall into the habit, it’s no big deal, and you’ll be so happy you started!

Benefits Of A Health Journal

  1. When you write down your symptoms you begin to notice patterns which will give you a deeper insight into what your body is doing and how to address it.
  2. Journaling will help you realize how much of an affect your food/exercise has on your mood/energy/motivation/sleep, etc.
  3. It may uncover hormonal issues of which you were previously unaware.
  4. Helps you notice if you have certain food allergies/sensitivities. (always bloated after a certain snack? Something isn’t agreeing with you.)
  5. Allows to you build a better health routine; if you don’t record what you’re currently doing, how can you make it better?
  6. When you’re keeping yourself accountable for your health decisions, it will help keep you from falling into a rut or backsliding.
  7. You will be able to clearly notice how much progress you have made since you implemented certain changes, which is extremely motivating and exciting.

I really love having a health journal. I also write down questions or theories I have, which I can later research on my own or bring to my doctor when I visit her. Plus this gives you a great excuse for picking out a new pretty journal. (And I’ll be honest with you, I’m always looking for pretty journals.) Do you think a health journal is something you’re willing to try? Do you have any experience from using a health journal? Let me know!

DIY Face Masks

So Good You Could Eat It

(oh wait, you totally could)

We all love natural products; we feel good about what we’re putting onto our skin because we know there’s nothing toxic in it.

But what if I told you.. that there are all natural ingredients in your very own kitchen… for YOUR FACE?

As much as I love luxurious masks, sometimes the bank doesn’t approve of the spending. But that is no reason for your precious self care to suffer! Simply walk into your kitchen and open your eyes to see the endless mask potential.

Honey & Cinnamon Mask

This mask is great to increase blood flow, kill bacteria, heal blemishes and scars, exfoliate, and moisturize. These are both super ingredients for the face, especially when used together.  *Heads-up*- depending on the sensitivity of your skin, the cinnamon may be too much. Always do a test patch to see how your skin reacts, and adjust accordingly. A simple honey mask will do plenty of good too.

Take about a TBS of raw honey, 1/2 tsp of cinnamon, mix together, and apply to clean face. Let sit for 10-15 minutes, rinse off and follow up with normal skin care routine. Your skin may look a bit pink, but that’s natural and it will fade in about a half an hour or less.

Egg White & Yogurt Mask

This is an anti-aging, exfoliating, and skin tightening mask. The yogurt hydrates while the natural enzymes help the skin shed off dead skin cells. The egg white is an astringent that helps shrink pores and tighten skin.

Mix 1 egg white and 2 TBS of organic yogurt and apply to clean skin for 10 minutes, rinse off and follow up with toner and moisturizer.

Egg Yolk & Avocado Mask

This is a super nourishing mask, great for people with dry skin. The egg yolk helps lock in moisture, hydrate, and nourish those dull and dry skin cells. Avocado (already a superfood) is also super for your skin! It’s really soothing to help with any inflammation, and moisturizes to keep skin smooth and supple.

Mix 1 egg yolk and 1/4 ripe avocado until combined, apply to clean skin for 15 minutes, rinse off and enjoy that beautiful skin!

Pretty great, huh? And the best part is it will cost you practically nothing to make these masks! Enjoy !

Gardening with Squirrels

(yeah, lots and lots of squirrels)

So since moving into a place of our own (no trailer thank God) I was finally able to begin my gardening endeavor! Mind you I’m a total novice and have only appreciated organic garden from afar (eating, duh.) But before I began, I was super aware that our yard was totally infested with squirrels, and squirrels like seeds and digging and totally destroying dirt.

After a lot of brainstorming, pinteresting, researching, I finally came across my answer: //” target=”_blank” rel=”noopener”>Hardware Netting! It’s super durable netting that easily bends to fit over a structure. Another bonus was that it required hardly any time or materials. All we did was stick a couple nails around the perimeter of the boxes and secure the netting over it.

I have had the boxes for a few weeks now and I love this netting! Even though it is durable I’m still able to cut out sections for plants that took off sooner than others (I’m talking about you, squash.) This way I can allow the early risers to flourish while still protecting my little seedlings.

I plan on eventually removing the netting entirely once all of my plants are pretty well established. Here’s the link for the product I used! You may also be able to find it at your local Lowes.

My next garden battles: worms tearing up my green bean plants, ants in my beds, yellowing leaves… but hey, the reward should be sweet, right?

Common Causes of Acne

Power to the Pimple

image via

Now this is one heck of a topic. The majority of people, men and women alike, have struggled with acne. If you’re one of those people who have miraculously avoided the common curse, well forgive me as I silently praise but also become increasingly jealous of you.

Our skin is an organ, just like your liver, spleen, and lungs. It is the mighty organ because it is exposed, first hand, to all of the external attacks- i.e. toxic fumes, sun rays, bacteria, etc. It can handle a lot, but it’s not a saint. Any sort of issue on your skin is a sign that your body is out of balance. There is something going on that isn’t right, and your body is telling you that through- you heard it- the dreaded, cursed, loathed, pimple.

External Causes

Dirty Phone

Dirty Pillowcase

Your incessant touching and picking of your skin

Incorrect Cleansing

Clogging Makeup

Internal Causes

Hormone Imbalance

Poor Diet

Food Sensitivity

Digestive Issues

Toxic Buildup

Yeah.. so pretty much anything can cause a skin flare-up. It can be a quick fix for some, or a long, long journey for others. My number one tip is to don’t stress out over it, that will only cause more skin problems.

Your skin does not define you.

You can and will conquer it.

Be patient.

Love your skin.

My Experience with Acupuncture-pt 1

Acupuncture: Being stuck with a ton of needles.. willingly.

This is part of a series. I will continue to write new posts when there are updates that are worthy of announcement.

Health Background: (aka why I ever started acupuncture)

I am plagued with SIBO (small intestine bacteria growth.)Which pretty much means:  I’m frequently bloated, I randomly get these sharp, debilitating pains in my gut that render me unable to walk or even stand, I have a super limited amount of foods I can eat without feeling nauseous or bloated. It’s an awful problem that unfortunately a lot of people struggle with but aren’t aware of it. (If you think you’re a candidate, ask your doctor for a breath test.)

I’ve had this for a couple years, now. First thinking it was just certain foods causing it, but it progressively got worse and worse despite eliminating more foods from my diet. I eventually went to a holistic doctor who prescribed a bunch of tests, and eventually referred me to an Acupuncturist. Who is thankfully a doctor who also practices in the same building.

I had  been reading about acupuncture for a couple years, always super curious but never dived in because I didn’t want to spend the money. Well I now had a really good reason, so I was not only excited about healing my body, but also learning about one of the coolest, most ancient practices out there!

We had an initial consultation and because of my serious condition she recommended I see her once a week for a couple months to start, and then reassess to see how my body was healing. I already liked her, she was super knowledgable with no nonsense, and I could tell she actually cared for me and my wellbeing- which is hard to find in conventional doctors.

First Treatment:

Laying on a paper covered table, head on a pillow, legs propped up on a pillow, in a dark, warm room, ears filled with soothing music. Before the needles, she took my pulses on each wrist, and felt around my stomach to see where the pain was. I couldn’t look as she poked my legs, feet, hands, arms, stomach, ears and head. I have a weird thing with needles. Not gonna lie, a few of them hurt which I wasn’t expecting. But then she left the room and let me lay for twenty l o n g minutes. With it being my first time I had a really hard time relaxing. I definitely didn’t fall asleep like a lot of people do. My mind kept whirring around with all the lists I needed to check off, then also these crazy waves of extreme grief came over me, like a full on mind and body detox. Afterwards though, I felt so good and relaxed and had this beautiful pink glow.

I just finished my fifth treatment and each time it is more and more enjoyable. I’m pretty sure I fell asleep last time! I can tell a huge difference in my body already, and it’s only been a little over a month. For one, my eyes don’t have crazy burning sensations anymore, I don’t feel exhausted at 3, and I am becoming less frequently bloated! I also feel more relaxed and “even.” Before I began my treatment, I really did feel like butter spread over too much bread. Thin, fragile, always on the verge of crying.. totally not healthy. I am so thankful for the opportunity and ability to heal my body in this natural way, and my doctor is amazing. She never misses a moment to teach me, and is so willing to answer all of my questions.

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them in the comments! I would be more than happy to help.
