How To Exfoliate Your Skin

Shedding Light on Shedding Cells

enzyme face mask. how to get glowing skin, how you should exfoliate your face. www.awellspringoflife.com

Our body is constantly producing new skin cells while simultaneously getting rid of the old stuff. But how often does this happen? And do we need to help the body do what it’s already designed to do?

To put it plainly- we need our body to produce new cells to have youthful, glowing, healthy skin. When our body holds onto the old cells, it literally builds up and you end up with an old, dull, dry, flaky surface that enhances wrinkles. And nobody wants that.

However, you must be wary of how often you exfoliate your skin; too often can leave the skin red, irritated, and more prone to problems such as rashes, breakouts, sun damage, etc.how you should exfoliate your face and body for glowing, youthful skin. www.awellspringoflife.com

Exfoliating the Face:

Ideally, you should exfoliate every 3-4 days, so about 1-2 times per week. It mainly depends on your skin; how sensitive is it, your age, and what your skin likes to be honest.

I have become so in-tune with my skin that I can tell the day when I need to exfoliate- my skin looks dull, I begin to see some congestion in my pores, and as soon as I exfoliate- BOOM.glowing glory.

Make sure, however, that you are using good exfoliating products. Don’t use any sort of physical exfoliation on your face– it’s too harsh and can cause microscopic tears which can lead to a whole host of problems. Stick to enzymes which break down and dissolve all of the old skin cells, and bring circulation to the face- encouraging healing. Check out my DIY Enzyme Mask here. This is the only exfoliation I use on my face!

Exfoliating the Body:

Now the body has much thicker skin than the face, so you can exfoliate much more often- every day really. Because it is thicker it can handle physical exfoliation such as dry brushing and sugar and salt scrubs. The great thing about sugar scrubs is that they simultaneously moisturize while getting rid of the dead stuff. So not only will your skin be soft, it will also be highly nourished and moisturized. Dry Brushing is also a great way to gently exfoliate the body! Dry  brush before the shower then moisturize with a nice body oil afterwards for ultimate glowing skin. Why You Need to Start Double Cleansing Your Face

If At First You Don’t Succeed, Try, Try Again!

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Yeah I know, washing your face late at night can be a real pain. And doing a double cleanse can seem even more brutal…..

But hey, before you roll your eyes in disbelief and close the screen, listen to why you actually should have been doing this all along.

You may have noticed that after cleansing, you wipe a cotton round across your face and still see all sorts of residue. .. right?

Well that doesn’t make any sense now does it? After cleansing one’s face should be clean, right?

Well. stop. hold up.

That’s where double cleansing comes into play! This was originally founded as a korean skin care step; starting with an oil cleanser and then following up with a foaming cleanser. But of course we know better than using those ultra-drying foaming face washes that literally strip everything off your face. So instead of foaming, we can just double up on the oiling (or cream cleanser or even HONEY)!

Double Cleansing Broken Down:

1st Cleanse– Targets and removes the sunscreen and makeup

2nd Cleanse– Cleanses all the grime, dirt and pollution that accumulates on the skin throughout the day

This is my current face washing routine:

  1. Take a dime size amount of Hemp Seed oil and massage it into my skin in little circular movements for a few minutes. You will begin to notice that little balls of dead skin, dirt, and clogged pores coming loose.
  2. Get a clean washcloth super hot, squeeze out the water, steam face until the wash cloth is no longer hot.
  3. Apply Raw Honey to still damp face! You can also combine the honey with essential oils, clay, cinnamon, activated charcoal– literally almost anything.
  4. Leave on for 5-35 minutes, depending on how much time you have. My favorite is to apply the mask before my bath and let my open pores absorb all of the goodness. I can’t tell you how good my skin looks after this- super bright, dewy, tight pores– it’s magic.

Pretty simple, and yet totally revolutionary. I have noticed a difference since starting this, and there’s no way I’m gonna stop now. My skin is softer and cleaner, and it shows.

As always, follow up with a toner and maybe some serums or just a moisturizer. Enjoy that pretty skin, babes.

Why Your Body Loves the Sauna

Steam On

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

If you follow me on instagram then you probably know that I recently joined a gym! I joined because I wanted to have some variety in my workouts. I was hitting a wall and losing serious motivation for any sort of exercise. With a gym I can take different classes while also using equipement when I want to. And best of all—- they have a sauna. I’ve realized I am addicted to the feeling of being extremely hot. That tingly sensation of your blood rushing, pores opening… mmm so good.

So you may already know that sweating is good for us; it detoxes the toxins, keeps all the organs functioning, etc. Did you also know that there is a direct correlation between sweating and glowing skin? Oh heck yeah there is.

However, don’t fret if you live in a colder environment where sweating isn’t really something you can achieve daily – – – I’ve got one word for you:

Sauna.

And even better– Infrared Saunas. These are better than traditional saunas because they use much milder temperature, and the type of heat actually penetrates deeper into the body, allowing a much more effective detox. Of course, if you can’t find an infrared sauna, a traditional one works too! (my gym only has the traditional kind, but I would take a sauna over no sauna any day!)

So just a quick history lesson- a sauna is technically just a small room used as a hot-air/ steam bath for cleaning and refreshing the body. They are built from wood, typically cedar because of its natural resistance to moisture. Saunas were invented in Finland about 2000 years ago. They were first large pits dug in the ground, but were later built above ground.

Benefits of Sauna

  • Detox plastics and heavy metals
  • Raise endorphin levels
  • Heal musculoskeletal ailments
  • Increase blood flow
  • Help immune system
  • Aid in weight loss

It is recommended to sweat every day for at least fifteen minutes to really help your body naturally detox all those toxins we come into contact with daily. For now I take my phone in with my and set a timer, but I’m going to get a watch soon so that I can leave my phone in my car! Really trying to work on doing more things without my phone being right there beside me. Maybe I’ll bring in a book to read or sudoku.

Have you ever sat in a sauna and felt your body releasing all those nasties?

Supplements for Beautiful, Glowing Skin

Beauty Pills

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Breaking out after puberty- it exists and totally sucks. Unfortunately, every 1 in 4 women are plagued with the breakouts- so at least you’re not alone.. right? Our hormones are constantly fluctuating, health is a high speed roller coaster, stress is rising to crazy levels.. so many factors contribute to our less-than-ideal skin. We do all we can to achieve clear skin; fancy facial oils, tons of veggies, staying hydrated, gulping down skin loving smoothies- but sometimes it just isn’t enough. Some key nutrients cannot be absorbed in the amount necessary from the food we eat. So we need to find the answer somewhere else- supplements. Supplements also provide glow-inducing ingredients you may not eat on the daily- like fermented cod liver oil. (gag)

Thankfully, our society is so advanced that we have the ability to snatch up any supplement we want. There are a few key supplements that are known for their plumping, glow-inducing, redness reducing, skin clearing, anti-aging properties.

Supplements for Beauty

Zinc – It has the ability to reduce dihydrotestosteron (DHT)- having too much of this hormone can clog pores, increase inflammation, and cause breakouts. I use this brand.

Ashwaganda – A total superstar herb aka Adaptogen. Ashwaganda is filled with antioxidants that reduce inflammation in the skin, and helps our hormonal responses when dealing with stress. (This is my favorite brand, their quality cannot be beat!)

Omega 3 – Two really great sources of this are Krill OIl and Fermented Cod Liver Oil. Omega 3’s naturally reduce inflammation, and are really high in antioxidants which help slow down aging. ( I only use this brand, they don’t add anything toxic or heat up their product)

Collagen – With its ability to restore elasticity, increase cell turnover, and reduce inflammation- this is a superfood you don’t want to miss out on. (This is honestly the best brand I have found. I can really tell that it’s making a difference in my hair and nails, and if it’s affecting the external, then it is most definitely impacting my internal health. I take 2 scoops daily, and I am now saving money by subscribing! One of the best things you can take for your body.)

There are so many other supplements on the market that can help your body rebalance, but these are the most common. If you’re still having stubborn breakouts after trying all of these supplements for a substantial amount of time, try seeing a naturopathic doctor so they can figure out the underlying causes. Your skin is a message board for your body. Breakouts, rashes, dryness are all signals that something is out of balance. Realize that your body, given half a chance, can heal itself. Stay positive!

Take care of yourself.

Ingredient Spotlight Series: Hemp Oil

Hippie’s Skin Care

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Now, now, don’t get all crazy on me. I’m not here taking a stand on the cannabis movement, I’m just trying to tell you about this really awesome, light, highly absorbable, non-comedogenic oil. For my fellow ladies out there who break out easily or have oily skin- this is the oil for you. I have used Hemp Oil for years so I’m pretty much an expert.

“Hemp oil or hempseed oil is obtained by pressing hemp seeds. Cold pressed, unrefined hemp oil is dark to clear light green in color, with a nutty flavor.”  Wikipedia

Unlike cannabis oil, Hemp Oil only contains trace amounts of THC so it won’t alter your state of mind or anything. just your skin.

Benefits of Hemp Seed Oil for Skin

  • Hemp Oil has the ability to penetrate the inner layers of the skin, promoting healthy cell growth.
  • The fats/lipids contained in hemp oil are actually extremely similar to the ones found in our own skin, making it a super effective moisturizer. Because it absorbs so easily, it beefs up the protecting agent our skin needs.
  • Increases elasticity, giving that beautiful glow to dull, dry, tired skin.
  • Will reduce redness from irritation caused from acne and psoriasis.
  • Helps eliminate oily skin by effectively bringing the skin back to balance.
  • It contains a wide variety of supplements; vitamin A, vitamin E, potassium, magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium and phosphorous.
  • Super high in antioxidants, which slows down aging and cell damage.

How to Use Hemp Seed Oil for Skin

Oil Cleanser:  I have found that Hemp oil is a great oil cleanser on it’s own. I pour a little bit into my hand and rub it in tiny circles with my fingers all over my face. I then put a hot washcloth over my face, steam for a bit, then repeat the whole process. Then follow up with your typical routine.

Skin Moisturizer: Yes it is a miraculous oil for moisturizing, but I have found through experience that this pretty green machine will STAIN. clothes, pillowcases, sheets, covers, etc. I don’t recommend using this alone.

TIPS: Hemp Oil is a sensitive one, so it needs to be kept in the fridge. For best quality, buy organic, unrefined, cold pressed. Like this one.

I encourage you to hop on that Hemp train!

Why You NEED Collagen

Baby Phat

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Collagen is a word frequently thrown around in the natural health and beauty world. Many companies and doctors praise it’s name, claiming it can heal anything from arthritis to dull skin. And not only have there been these claims, but also the countless testimonies from people who have had amazing results. It’s quickly rising to the top of the ‘things you need to add into your diet’ list.

What is Collagen

“Collagen is the main structural protein found in skin and other connective tissues..” Dictionary

Although collagen is technically a protein, it also contains a mixture of amino acids (proline, glycine, hydroxyproline, arginine). This is found not only in our own bodies, but also in the bones and connective tissues of animals.

Why You Need Collagen

Collagen is something our body already produces. However, age has a tendency to take things away from us- one of those being collagen. The wrinkles, the kinks in our legs, the sagging neck- all attributed to the slow, but consistent loss of collagen.

Collagen gives skin its elasticity, hair its strength, and connective tissue its ability to hold everything in place. It’s pretty necessary to have a good amount of this in your body, for obvious reasons.

Supplementing Collagen

Age can decrease collagen, but so can stress, gut imbalances, poor diet, etc. So pretty much all Americans are really in need of collagen, no matter their age.

Thankfully, modern medicine has found a way to extract collagen and making it available to the public.

Collagen comes in powdered form, making it super easy to mix with water, non-dairy milk, smoothie, or even some snacks! There are really great recipes online that use collagen if you want to get creative. When choosing a powder, be sure it is sourced responsibly and grass-fed from a reputable company. I currently use this kind, and I LOVE it! Such good quality, and immediately dissolves into the liquid. No lie, I can tell a difference when I use this supplement.

Try it and see the magic work! Feel the power. Get the Collagen!

#1 Rule For Healthy Aging

Sun- Friend or Foe? or Frenemy?

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Just because it’s winter and grey and cloudy and cold.. DOES NOT MEAN YOU SHOULD STOP WEARING SUNSCREEN. you need it all year long. And lemme tell you why:

The sun is great, it’s one of my best friends. I love the sun. I love the heat, I love the bright sunshine, I love being able to wear shorts and tank-tops and pretty dresses, I love being able to be outside. I love the sun.

BUT.

Your skin and the sun, however, aren’t as close. They kind of have this love/hate relationship. But it’s kind of one way deal because the sun, as far as I know, doesn’t really care about anyone.

But I digress.

Your skin needs the sun because it provides the best form of vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is extremely important for your overall health; increased brain function, better sleep, regulating hormones, reducing depression, enhancing immune system, etc. It also can help PREVENT certain forms of skin cancer with certain, safe exposure to UVB rays. Sun exposure can also help with certain skin diseases such as acne and psoriasis, by enhancing skin barrier functions.

So I’m not saying to stay inside away from all forms of sunlight, your body obviously needs the sun to stay alive. They key here is to be smart about your sun exposure.

The #1 way to stay safe is sunscreen.

Too much sun can cause a whole host of problems:

  • Age spots
  • Wrinkles
  • Loss of collagen
  • Hyper-pigmentation
  • Cancer

Sunscreen is especially important. But make sure you’re buying sunscreen with the physical barrier, and not chemical. Zinc oxide and the like provide a physical barrier on your skin, so the rays actually bounce off. Whereas a chemical sunscreen actually sinks into your pores… gross.

And as always, always buy non-toxic products. If you buy a sunscreen full of chemicals, you may actually cause skin cancer. (Which is so ridiculous.)

Here are my recommended favorites:

Face- Josh Rosebrook Tinted Spf

Body- Badger SPF 30 unscented, tinted

Let us now take on this winter with perfect, sunscreened skin.

Why You Need To Start Steaming Your Face

Hot and Steamy

Never heard of face steaming before? Well, get ready..

Face steaming is pretty much exactly what it sounds like; putting your freshly cleaned face over steaming water, sometimes with herbs or oils, and stay there for about 5-10 minutes. No gimmicks or tricks, just plain old skin and steam.

Although it is pretty simple, steaming your face is packed with tons of benefits.

Why You should Start Steaming Your Face

Deep pore cleansing– When the hot steam is penetrating your skin, the face begins to sweat, detoxing the skin and gently removing dirt and grime.

Relaxation- You may not think it, but being immersed in steam is very relaxing. This calms your mind and body, which makes your skin glow.

Increased effectiveness of other treatments- When your skin is properly cleansed, serums and masks can fully penetrate with skin, making them more effective.

How to Achieve a Facial Steam

Bring a pot of water to a boil.

Transfer to a glass bowl.

Drape a towel over your head and the bowl, trapping the steam.

Keep face close enought to the steam so that you can feel it, but not so close that it’s burning or overheating.

Stay here for 5-10 minutes.

Only do this once per week.

Optional: Add herbs, flowers, or essential oils to water for added skin benefits.

Tip: If you have a severe skin condition, please consult a physician beforehand. Some may find that steaming their face actually worsens their skin condition.

Maybe add this to your weekend ‘take some time for me’ routine, or to wind down after a long day. Your skin will really enjoy this wonderful treat!

DIY Clay Detox Mask

Scare Your Husband One More Time

Processed with VSCO with f2 presetAlright my beauties, I’ve got another clutch mask for you that is a total skin care NEED. Our skin gets filled with nasties; dirt, oil, sebum, makeup, toxins, etc. If you don’t cleanse properly and detox frequently, your pores become clogged. This can cause breakouts, wrinkles, dull skin, uneven skin tone, inflammation– the works. We can both agree these things are best avoided at all cost. And when the actual cost of the mask is low?             OH HECK YEAH.

Detox the Heck Outta Your Face Mask

Ingredients

1 TBS Bentonite Clay   (this is a really awesome deal, and it will literally last you forever)

2 TSP Alcohol Free Witch Hazel

1 Drop Essential Oil (Melalueca, Lavender, Sandalwood, Juniper Berry are all good choices)

Mix, add more clay or water depending on your preferred consistency. Do not use any metal while making this mask, it will ruin the clay’s ability to draw out impurities.

Apply to freshly cleansed and toned skin

Set timer for 10 minutes

Wash off, Tone, Moisturize! Done!

Apply once a week for ultimate effectiveness.

Processed with VSCO with f2 preset

right before I rinse it all off!

Common Causes of Acne

Power to the Pimple

static1.squarespace

image via www.drterry.com

Now this is one heck of a topic. The majority of people, men and women alike, have struggled with acne. If you’re one of those people who have miraculously avoided the common curse, well forgive me as I silently praise but also become increasingly jealous of you.

Our skin is an organ, just like your liver, spleen, and lungs. It is the mighty organ because it is exposed, first hand, to all of the external attacks- i.e. toxic fumes, sun rays, bacteria, etc. It can handle a lot, but it’s not a saint. Any sort of issue on your skin is a sign that your body is out of balance. There is something going on that isn’t right, and your body is telling you that through- you heard it- the dreaded, cursed, loathed, pimple.

External Causes

Dirty Phone

Dirty Pillowcase

Your incessant touching and picking of your skin

Incorrect Cleansing

Stress

Clogging Makeup

Internal Causes

Hormone Imbalance

Poor Diet

Food Sensitivity

Digestive Issues

Genes

Toxic Buildup

Yeah.. so pretty much anything can cause a skin flare-up. It can be a quick fix for some, or a long, long journey for others. My number one tip is to don’t stress out over it, that will only cause more skin problems.

Your skin does not define you.

You can and will conquer it.

Be patient.

Love your skin.
