Toxic Ingredients In Your Dry Shampoo + DIY Dry Shampoo

The Evils Hiding In Your Beauty Cabinet

DIY Dry Shampoo untinted. Make your own dry shampoo. cheap, simple, effective, dry shampoo. www.awellspringoflife.comLook, I knoww how it is. You have so many things in your daily life that sticking to a hair washing schedule can be difficult. So you end up with hair that may or may not have a little too much oil, and it may or may not make you feel your best. Thank GOODNESS there’s dry shampoo!

My guess is that you’ve already discovered this little invention if your hair washing isn’t a priority. But were you aware of the ingredients in conventional dry shampoos?

Not good, I tell you, not good at all.

Toxic Dry Shampoo Ingredients

Talc– This is used in dry shampoos because it’s great at absorbing… but at a serious cost- it’s made up of magnesium, oxygen, and silicon, but can contain asbestos fibers!! Talc has been linked to cancer, so best to avoid that one.

Alcohol– Because the goal when using dry shampoo is to absorb oil and moisture, many companies use alcohol because it does dry the hair. However, it can actually be way too drying to our strands of hair and precious scalp. Believe it or not, we do need some oils on our head to keep the scalp healthy, but alcohol absorbs the good oils as well. Many people can actually develop dry scalp, dandruff, and blocked pores.

Siloxane, Silicones & Octamethylcyclotetrasiloxane– Silicones and siloxanes are really popular and commonly used in many beauty products, because they actually prevent the product from breaking down and making it dry faster. Anything that prevents nature from taking it’s natural course is going to have some adverse affects on your health.

LPG’s (Liquid Petroleum Gas), Butane, Propane, Isobutane– Ladies, this is what makes up the “aerosol” part of your dry shampoo. Not only can it cause respiratory problems, but it’s actually super harmful to our ozone layer. Just take the higher route and apply loose powder dry shampoos to save you and your planet.

Cetrimonium Chloride– This ingredient is known for its ability to prevent static and making your hair sick up. Although it is a nice thought, the actual ingredient is classified as TOXIC, and is lethal is ingested orally……. so thats great.

So all in all, it really is better to check the ingredients in your dry shampoo to make sure you aren’t accidentally causing more harm than good.

Here are some natural dry shampoos that actually do the job:

  1. Captain Blankenship Organic Mermaid Dry Shampoo
  2. Lulu Organics Lavender & Clary Sage Hair Powder
  3. Fat and The Moon – All Natural/Organic Lavender + Cocoa Dry Shampoo

You can also easily make your own! I used to own a natural and organic beauty company, and this is the exact formula I used for the dry shampoo I sold! I still use this today because it’s insanely cheap, super effective, and it will not hurt you, your body, or our planet at all.

Why Your Body Loves the Sauna

Steam On

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

If you follow me on instagram then you probably know that I recently joined a gym! I joined because I wanted to have some variety in my workouts. I was hitting a wall and losing serious motivation for any sort of exercise. With a gym I can take different classes while also using equipement when I want to. And best of all—- they have a sauna. I’ve realized I am addicted to the feeling of being extremely hot. That tingly sensation of your blood rushing, pores opening… mmm so good.

So you may already know that sweating is good for us; it detoxes the toxins, keeps all the organs functioning, etc. Did you also know that there is a direct correlation between sweating and glowing skin? Oh heck yeah there is.

However, don’t fret if you live in a colder environment where sweating isn’t really something you can achieve daily – – – I’ve got one word for you:

Sauna.

And even better– Infrared Saunas. These are better than traditional saunas because they use much milder temperature, and the type of heat actually penetrates deeper into the body, allowing a much more effective detox. Of course, if you can’t find an infrared sauna, a traditional one works too! (my gym only has the traditional kind, but I would take a sauna over no sauna any day!)

So just a quick history lesson- a sauna is technically just a small room used as a hot-air/ steam bath for cleaning and refreshing the body. They are built from wood, typically cedar because of its natural resistance to moisture. Saunas were invented in Finland about 2000 years ago. They were first large pits dug in the ground, but were later built above ground.

sauna-2844863_960_720

Benefits of Sauna

  • Detox plastics and heavy metals
  • Raise endorphin levels
  • Heal musculoskeletal ailments
  • Increase blood flow
  • Help immune system
  • Aid in weight loss

It is recommended to sweat every day for at least fifteen minutes to really help your body naturally detox all those toxins we come into contact with daily. For now I take my phone in with my and set a timer, but I’m going to get a watch soon so that I can leave my phone in my car! Really trying to work on doing more things without my phone being right there beside me. Maybe I’ll bring in a book to read or sudoku.

Have you ever sat in a sauna and felt your body releasing all those nasties?

Supplements for Beautiful, Glowing Skin

Beauty Pills

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Breaking out after puberty- it exists and totally sucks. Unfortunately, every 1 in 4 women are plagued with the breakouts- so at least you’re not alone.. right? Our hormones are constantly fluctuating, health is a high speed roller coaster, stress is rising to crazy levels.. so many factors contribute to our less-than-ideal skin. We do all we can to achieve clear skin; fancy facial oils, tons of veggies, staying hydrated, gulping down skin loving smoothies- but sometimes it just isn’t enough. Some key nutrients cannot be absorbed in the amount necessary from the food we eat. So we need to find the answer somewhere else- supplements. Supplements also provide glow-inducing ingredients you may not eat on the daily- like fermented cod liver oil. (gag)

Thankfully, our society is so advanced that we have the ability to snatch up any supplement we want. There are a few key supplements that are known for their plumping, glow-inducing, redness reducing, skin clearing, anti-aging properties.

Supplements for Beauty

Zinc – It has the ability to reduce dihydrotestosteron (DHT)- having too much of this hormone can clog pores, increase inflammation, and cause breakouts. I use this brand.

Ashwaganda – A total superstar herb aka Adaptogen. Ashwaganda is filled with antioxidants that reduce inflammation in the skin, and helps our hormonal responses when dealing with stress. (This is my favorite brand, their quality cannot be beat!)

Omega 3 – Two really great sources of this are Krill OIl and Fermented Cod Liver Oil. Omega 3’s naturally reduce inflammation, and are really high in antioxidants which help slow down aging. ( I only use this brand, they don’t add anything toxic or heat up their product)

Collagen – With its ability to restore elasticity, increase cell turnover, and reduce inflammation- this is a superfood you don’t want to miss out on. (This is honestly the best brand I have found. I can really tell that it’s making a difference in my hair and nails, and if it’s affecting the external, then it is most definitely impacting my internal health. I take 2 scoops daily, and I am now saving money by subscribing! One of the best things you can take for your body.)

There are so many other supplements on the market that can help your body rebalance, but these are the most common. If you’re still having stubborn breakouts after trying all of these supplements for a substantial amount of time, try seeing a naturopathic doctor so they can figure out the underlying causes. Your skin is a message board for your body. Breakouts, rashes, dryness are all signals that something is out of balance. Realize that your body, given half a chance, can heal itself. Stay positive!

Take care of yourself.

Relax. Eat Good Food. Do Things You Love. and Take Those Vitamins!

Disclaimers: I am not a medical professional. The goal of this post is to share information about supplements and my personal experience with them. I did my best research and fact-checking for accuracy. It is always best to check with your doctor if you are unsure about using these supplements!

3 Easy Ways To Detox Your Skin

Detox and Be Merry

FullSizeRender (11)

I’m sure you’re aware of how many toxins we come into contact with daily.

Please just read this excerpt from Natural Society :

Modest estimates have suggested that we are exposed to more than 700,000 different toxic chemicals on a daily basis, and this doesn’t include the crazy poisons that GMO companies are pumping into the food supply…. There are chemicals in our food, our water, the air we breathe, the clothing we wear, the carpet we walk on, and the plastics that surround us.”

This should totally freak you out. Because it is so, so, so freaky. And think of children who’s immune systems are still developing, how can they possibly fight off all of those toxins?

There’s not much we can do in one day to stop the amount of toxins that are in every inch of our life, but there are thankfully a few things we can do daily to get rid of those toxins.

Epsom Salt Bath

This is one of the easiest and most luxurious ways to detox. They’re extremely easy to create and you can make it as fancy or simple as you please. No need to drop a ton of cash at a spa when you can enjoy the same thing at home! The Epsom Salt Baths flush all of those impurities out from your system. You can also add in various essential oils for added anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial benefits! Honey and Bentonite clay can be added for extra detoxing power! Here is my blog post featuring two of my faaaaavorite bath blends. Check it out!

Clay Mask

Even if you’re a religious skin cleanser, you still need to apply a deep cleansing mask at least once a week to really get all of the dirt, makeup, and impurities out from your skin.  Clay acts as a magnet and attaches itself to the impurities, so when you wash it off you wash off the dirt as well! I have a great blog post giving you the super easy instructions! Its cheap and hella effective. check it out here.

Dry Brushing

I have a previous blog post written all about dry brushing! You can find it here. It’s a really simple way to detox your skin before a shower or bath, it is especially beneficial for the lymphatic system.

And that’s it! And you can combine all three for a totally awesome detoxing extravaganza!

  • Step one: Dry brush the body.
  • step two: Cleanse skin and apply a clay mask.
  • step three: Lower yourself into a luxurious, relaxing bath.

So good for both your internal and external body. Make time for yourself! It isn’t vain or selfish, it’s healthy.

Achieve Your Dreams with Mantras

‘Mirror Mirror on the Wall, Who is the Fairest of Them All?’

Processed with VSCO with c1 preset

Yeah, I got jokes.

Alright babes, lets talk about mantras.

A mantra is a phrase or idea that you repeat either out loud or internally to help keep you focused on that thought. This is especially useful if you’re struggling with something and need to stay positive. Of course this could be used for any area in your life, but I’m going to focus on how to use it in your perception of your beauty. I know many of us may struggle with how we look, and always think of things we wish we could change. This isn’t healthy. And with specific mantras we can train our brain to think differently, starting the healing process.

Begin by setting your intention- what do you desire? What problem is it you wish to resolve? This will help set the foundation for your mantra, keeping you motivated and focused.

Repeat the mantra as many times as you can.

This can vary depending on the person, but the most common practice is to repeat it to yourself a couple times throughout the whole day. Maybe when you wake up, get ready for work, look in the mirror, before you sleep, etc. Always make sure to try and repeat them to yourself especially when your mind starts to turn negative. This will help reinforce those positive thoughts. Consistency and repetition is key if you really want to see any improvements.

Mantra Examples

I am enough.

May I be happy. May I be healthy. May I be creative. May I be at ease.

I am thankful for everything I have

I am fulfilled. I am fearless.

Today, I will choose happiness.

I am bountiful, blissful, and beautiful; bountiful, blissful, and beautiful I am.

I honor that which I am capable of becoming.

I am loved.

I am beautiful.

I hope this information helps you with any areas in your life you may need healing, confidence, or support. Let me know how it works for you!

Why You NEED Collagen

Baby Phat

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Collagen is a word frequently thrown around in the natural health and beauty world. Many companies and doctors praise it’s name, claiming it can heal anything from arthritis to dull skin. And not only have there been these claims, but also the countless testimonies from people who have had amazing results. It’s quickly rising to the top of the ‘things you need to add into your diet’ list.

What is Collagen

“Collagen is the main structural protein found in skin and other connective tissues..” Dictionary

Although collagen is technically a protein, it also contains a mixture of amino acids (proline, glycine, hydroxyproline, arginine). This is found not only in our own bodies, but also in the bones and connective tissues of animals.

Why You Need Collagen

Collagen is something our body already produces. However, age has a tendency to take things away from us- one of those being collagen. The wrinkles, the kinks in our legs, the sagging neck- all attributed to the slow, but consistent loss of collagen.

Collagen gives skin its elasticity, hair its strength, and connective tissue its ability to hold everything in place. It’s pretty necessary to have a good amount of this in your body, for obvious reasons.

Supplementing Collagen

Age can decrease collagen, but so can stress, gut imbalances, poor diet, etc. So pretty much all Americans are really in need of collagen, no matter their age.

Thankfully, modern medicine has found a way to extract collagen and making it available to the public.

Collagen comes in powdered form, making it super easy to mix with water, non-dairy milk, smoothie, or even some snacks! There are really great recipes online that use collagen if you want to get creative. When choosing a powder, be sure it is sourced responsibly and grass-fed from a reputable company. I currently use this kind, and I LOVE it! Such good quality, and immediately dissolves into the liquid. No lie, I can tell a difference when I use this supplement.

Try it and see the magic work! Feel the power. Get the Collagen!

Highlighter gives you that added glow, and defines some of your best features (eyes, cheekbones, etc.) Like all makeup though, you gotta be careful with the ingredients. Back in the day people were using toxic ingredients, but we should know better now.

What’s In My *Non Toxic* Makeup Bag

No Nasties Here

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

Alright my babes. Unless you’re some sort of purist, you wear SOME kind of makeup. Whether it’s just concealer or a full on fabulous face- you should be aware of what you’re putting on your skin. Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs 70% of everything we put onto it. So that lipstick you love? YEAH, you’re pretty much eating it like a snack.

Every bit of conventional makeup/skincare/bodycare/cosmetic contains chemicals and toxins that can cause infertility, cancer, inflammation, sensitivities, etc. It’s not pretty. If you want to find out how many nasties your products contain, just type the name into EWG SkinDeep and they’ll rate it for you! (It’s a dope website, I look everything up on there.)

One of the first ways people can make the switch to healthier lifestyle is to gradually throw out their gross makeup and replace it with a healthy alternative. I’m not a huge makeup connoisseur, but yo’ girl likes to look nice and put together. I have compiled a list of my top faves that I use pretty much everyday. For the record, I have super sensitive skin prone to breakouts, so I have to be really careful of what oils/butters/waxes I put on my skin.

Mascara

I’ve been loving this mascara! It thickens, lengthens, and it comes in a small tube so I don’t waste any product! (you should replace your mascara every three months to avoid bacteria growing in it) PLUS!! It’s only $14 !!!

Concealer (face)

Jane Iredale has a really great option for those who are prone to breakouts. It’s nice and smooth, and melts into the skin with the warmth of your finger. The only thing I don’t like is that it comes with two colors, and I never use the lighter shade so it’s a tad wasteful.

Concealer (under eyes)

This concealer is the BOMB. It’s creamy and hides dark circles exceedingly well. Plus I feel like they have wonderful color options to match your skin. It is a bit buttery though, so I know a lot of people set it with a powder. I never do, and it does fade over the day, but I don’t care about that too much. Best part; because it’s a thicker consistency you only need a little bit, so this puppy lasts a looooong time.

SPF

I usually wear a light oil beneath it, (hemp seed oil) because my face is a little on the drier side. But I looooooove this formula. It’s efficient and gives my face a really nice natural glow.

Eyebrow Tint

Glossier is like the bridge between 100% natural and conventional. The ingredients are pretty good, not perfect, but still really good. I love how this product keeps my brows in place while also making them look thicker and darker, but still super natural. The product lasts a really long time too.

Eyeliner (liquid)

Every once in awhile I like to look fancy and give myself a cat eye. I think it looks really sexy and it doesn’t require too much skill. This eyeliner has a really nice applicator, and the actual liner lasts a long time. But beware, if you have oils near your eyes the liner will come off.

Lip SPF

Coola is great. There’s not weird white tint or nasty taste. And it gives your lips a nice sheen, and is slightly moisturizing.

Red Lip Stain

I have seriously just begun to wear any sort of tint on my lips (..23 years old.) I love this color and this consistency. It does wear off over time, and leave a slight slight tint, but you should really reapply it if you want something super intense.

And that’s it! My main focus is always healthy skin, so I definitely care a lot more about how my skin looks without makeup.

DIY Hydrating & Exfoliating Lip Scrub

Lippity Bippity BOP: Pretty Lips For You

Processed with VSCO with m5 preset

If you read my previous blog post here, you will know that exfoliation is one of the key steps to keeping your lips “kissable.” Constantly unveiling new, young cells keeps the lips from looking old and dull. You can of course buy a lip scrub like this one, but it can be much cheaper (and more fun) to make your own!

So whether you’re ballin’ on a budget, or an artsy fartsy type– here’s a simple yet effective recipe for your lips:

DIY Luscious Lip Scrub

Ingredients:

1 TBS Oil (coconut, almond, olive, any oil works!)

2 TBS Sugar (white, brown, coconut, etc)

Small Glass Container With Lid

Optional: Two Drops Of Your Preferred Essential Oil ( I like Peppermint, it’s so invigorating!)

Directions:

Mix oil and sugar, then the essential oils, and blend! If you want to make a larger batch, keep the same ratio 1 part oil to 2 parts sugar. These also make great gifts!

TIP: if you want, you can make a much larger batch and actually use it on your body as a body scrub! Just NOT your face, the manual exfoliation is way too harsh for your gentle skin.

And that’s it! Super super simple, and cost effective.

Do you have any other tips for keeping your lips nice and pretty?

How To Achieve Your Best Lips

Pucker Up

FullSizeRender (8)

Who doesn’t want beautiful, lustrous, pouty lips? Kissable lips have always been in style. But like everything else in regards to beauty, you need to treat them well. It’s fairly easy to keep your best lips forward:

Natural Beauty Tips for Lips:

  • Keep Lips Hydrated

Our body is composed of about 50-60% of water, which hello, is a ton of water. So of course when our body becomes dehydrated, it immediately begins to show effects; firstly with the skin (aka lips.) Dehydration causes both dry lips and loss of natural color. Drink water throughout the entire day, and eat a diet rich in water; fruits, cucumbers, celery, etc.

  • Stop Licking and Biting Your Lips

Although it seems weird, saliva can actually further dry out your lips. And extended dryness can lead to darkening of lips. Both biting and licking is actually an idiosyncrasy caused from anxiousness. It is best to break this habit, as it can cause harsh damage. The best way to kick the habit to the curb is wearing a flavored lip balm as it will remind you to not lick and bite.

  • Lay off the Lipsticks

Lipsticks are made up of wax, pigments, fragrance, oils, and unfortunately, alcohol. And if you are not careful with choosing natural beauty products, conventional lipsticks contain very harsh chemicals that damage your lips. Try and find all natural lipsticks made with nourishing and moisturizing ingredients.

  • Use SPF

You must know by now how harsh the sun is on our skin, causing accelerated aging; wrinkles, dark spots, loss of elasticity, etc. This is also true for the skin on your lips, so make sure you use lip products with SPF.

  • Keep Wrinkles Away

Sun exposure, age, and smoking all contribute to those small lines the encompass the lips. Make sure you are doing all you can prevent them, including consistently using a hydrating cream on your lips.

  • Exfoliation Is King

Cells are constantly being shed, unveiling a new, fresh, young layer of cells that keep the skin soft and supple. The skin naturally does this, but to speed up the process exfoliation is the answer. By manually exfoliating once a week, you encourage the skin to shed cells more often, keeping the skin looking youthful for longer.

And there you have it! Simple, yet crucial tips for keeping kissable lips.

Now, go use them wisely <3
